Miss Sloane

In a sentence:  A gripping look into the dark corners of political lobbyists.

Jessica Chastain stars as the titular character Miss Sloane, who we first see cleverly scheming in big high powered firm courting interest from the gun lobby. Sloane laughs in their face and soon switches over to a smaller firm (Headed by Mark Strong) to push through a bill on greater firearm restrictions. It’s certainly timely as gun violence continues to occur time and time again.

Miss Sloane is a fiery, extremely intelligent women who knows how to play the games that need to be played. Think Frank Underwood crossed with Harvey Specter (although she never says anything as trite as Harvey’s go to catch phrase “You’re god damn right I am”). She plays the character well and was a great fit for the role.

Overall this is very much a game of cat and mouse, clever plays, surveillance, underhand tactics and bravado. There are so many twists and turns along the way, you’re constantly second guessing motives and trying to track who’s using who. This is only enhanced by the excellent writing and snappy dialogue throughout.

It is fairly one dimensional in its focus, but this is not a bad thing. There are some glimpses into the little “personal life” Sloane has after spending 16+ hours working (did I mention she doesn’t really sleep and takes stimulants to keep her going) which fit the overarching story and add further intrigue as you never know what the other side will pick at to get the win.

If you have any taste for law dramas, or you simply like a good intellectual thriller, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
